Spider Chart

Display multivariate data in the form of a three or more quantitative variables represented on axes starting from the same point.

A Spider Chart—also known as a Radar Chart—is a two-dimensional visualization that plots data values for multiple categories along axes that extend from a central point like spokes of a wheel. Each axis represents a category, and the plotted values are connected to form a polygonal shape. This makes it easy to visualize strengths, weaknesses, and comparisons across multiple variables in a single chart.

When to Use a Spider Chart

Use a Spider Chart when you want to:

  • Analyze performance areas across multiple categories simultaneously.

  • Compare allocated vs. actual values for departments, projects, or KPIs.

  • Highlight strengths and weaknesses in skill assessments or survey responses.

  • Visualize multivariate data where relationships between metrics matter.

Examples:

  • Comparing departmental budgets vs. spending.

  • Displaying employee skill assessments across technical and soft skills.

  • Analyzing business unit performance across multiple KPIs.

Chart Properties

General Settings

  • Exclude Global Filter – Exclude the chart from global filters applied at the report level.

  • Enable Base Zero – Start the value scale from zero.

  • Show Point – Display data point markers on the axes.

  • Show Legend – Enable legend to identify series.

    • Legend Style – Fixed or Floating.

    • Legend Font Size – Adjust legend text size (Fixed only).

    • Legend Orientation – Vertical or Horizontal (Fixed only).

    • Legend Checkbox – Add checkboxes to toggle series visibility.

  • Chart Type – Choose chart outline type:

    • Polygon

    • Circle

  • Web Type – Define how the chart is displayed:

    • Stroke (outline only)

    • Fill (colored area fill)

  • Axis Color – Choose axis line color.

View Filter

  • Filter – Apply filter conditions to restrict the displayed dataset.

Category Axis

  • Axis Label – Show or hide labels for each category axis.

Value Axis

  • Format Type – None, Auto, Percent, Thousand, Lacs, Crore, Million, Billion, Trillion, Quadrillion.

  • Currency Type – None, Rupees, Euro, Pound, USD, Yen, Cent.

  • Precision – Control decimal precision (up to 5 places).

Insights

  • Text – Add annotations or commentary. Highlight values using asterisks (e.g., 70%, Top Performer).

  • Font Size – Adjust text size.

  • Font Color – Select annotation text color.

  • Text Align – Left, Right, Center.

  • Position – Place annotations at the Bottom or Right of the chart.

Best Practices

  • Use the Polygon type for clearer category comparison, or the Circle for smooth presentation.

  • Apply Fill Web Type for emphasizing differences, and Stroke for clean outlines.

  • Keep the number of categories between 5–10 for readability.

  • Use contrasting colors for series to avoid confusion.

  • Add Insights to emphasize important patterns or findings.
