Pie Chart
A pie chart is the most common visualization for showing proportions and percentages, allowing users to quickly see the relative popularity of each category.
A Pie Chart is one of the most widely used visualization types to display proportions, percentages, and category distributions within a dataset. Each slice of the pie represents a category’s contribution to the total, making it easy to identify which category is the largest and which is the smallest. Pie Charts are most effective when the number of categories is six or fewer, ensuring readability and reducing visual clutter.
When to Use a Pie Chart
Use a Pie Chart when you want to:
Show relative proportions of categories within a whole.
Quickly identify the largest and smallest contributors.
Compare part-to-whole relationships instead of absolute values.
Visualize percentage distributions where categories sum to 100%.
Create simple, executive-friendly views of market share, budget allocation, or survey responses.
Best use case:
Comparing categories to quickly find the top performers and the least performers.
Examples:
Market share distribution across competitors.
Departmental budget allocation within an organization.
Variations:
Pie – Standard circular pie representation.
Doughnut – A variation with a central hole, providing additional room for labels or KPIs.
Semi-Doughnut – A half-circle version, often used for compact visualizations.
