Semi Gauge Chart

A Semi-gauge chart displays a single metric's value against a target, dynamically changing colors to show if the data is within, approaching, or exceeding a predefined range.

A Semi-Gauge Chart is a visualization that uses a semi-circle dial with a needle to indicate a target value against a defined range. The gauge dynamically changes color ranges to signal whether monitored data is within limits, approaching thresholds, or exceeding them. This chart is particularly effective in dashboards, real-time monitoring systems, and executive reports, where quick status interpretation is essential.

When to Use a Semi-Gauge Chart

Use a Semi-Gauge Chart when you want to:

  • Track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) against predefined ranges.

  • Monitor progress indicators and instantly flag performance shortfalls.

  • Represent quantity or percentage metrics within a limited scale.

  • Highlight alerts when actual values exceed thresholds.

Examples:

  • Monitoring student or class performance in an examination.

  • Displaying real-time server load utilization.

  • Tracking project progress against a completion target.

Chart Properties

General Settings

  • Show Range – Display range bands on the semi-gauge.

  • Minimum Value – Define the lowest scale value (must be less than Maximum).

  • Maximum Value – Define the highest scale value (must be greater than Minimum).

  • Target – Enable/disable the target indicator.

  • Target Value – Set the numeric target to display on the gauge.

  • Field as Target – Use a measure field instead of a static value as the target.

    • Aggregation – Choose aggregation type (Sum, Avg, etc.).

    • Measure – Select the measure field.

    • Target Color – Assign a color to the target marker.

  • Speedometer Width – Adjust the width of the gauge arc.

  • Needle Width – Adjust the thickness of the needle pointer.

  • Center Color – Set color for the gauge’s center hub.

  • Show Ticks – Display tick marks on the gauge.

    • Ticks Color – Choose tick mark color.

  • Pointer Color – Set needle/pointer color.

  • Font Color – Define font color for the numeric value shown.

  • Marker Font Color – Define font color for range start and end markers.

  • Show Title – Display chart title.

    • Title – Enter the chart’s title text.

    • Title Font Color – Customize title font color.

  • Exclude Global Filter – Prevent global filters from affecting this chart.

View Filter

  • Filter – Apply filter conditions to restrict which measure/dimension data is displayed.

Range

  • Show Alert – Enable color-coded ranges (% based).

  • Add – Insert a new range with custom color coding.

    • Value Color – Assign color for values in the range.

    • Base Color – Assign base background color.

Note:

  • Value, Color, and Base Color are available when Show Alert is disabled.

  • If Show Range is enabled, multiple ranges can be displayed on the semi-gauge.

Format

  • Precision – Set decimal precision (up to 5).

  • Format Type – Select format: None, Auto, Percent, Thousand, Lacs, Crore, Million, Billion, Trillion, Quadrillion.

  • Currency Type – Display values with symbols (Rupees, Euro, Pound, USD, Yen, Cent).

Notes & Constraints

  • The target value must fall within the min–max range of the gauge.

  • Semi-Gauge supports only one measure value.

  • If a Dimension is selected, it is automatically converted to a Measure.

  • Base color appears when the set Maximum Value exceeds the dataset’s maximum measure value.

Best Practices

  • Use contrasting range colors (e.g., green, yellow, red) to make status zones clear.

  • Keep ranges limited (e.g., 3–5) for readability.

  • Apply alerts sparingly to emphasize critical KPIs only.

  • Ensure targets are realistic and within the defined range to avoid misleading visuals.
